For serious cardiac events, complex trauma, or neurological emergencies, evacuation to Colombo (Sri Lanka) or Singapore is the protocol. **Seaplane transfers operate only during daylight hours.** If a medical emergency occurs after dark, you are reliant on speedboat transfer to the nearest inhabited island with medical capabilities — which may be basic. ## What the Resorts Provide Premium resorts typically have an on-site nurse or doctor and basic emergency equipment. Some of the larger operations — such as Soneva Fushi — maintain well-equipped medical centres. But "well-equipped" is relative. No resort medical centre can perform surgery. **What to verify before booking:** - Does the resort have a resident doctor (not just a nurse)? - What is the transfer time to Male in minutes, by seaplane and by speedboat? - Does the resort have a decompression chamber (critical for divers)? - What is the medical evacuation protocol after dark? ## Practical Intelligence **Travel insurance is non-negotiable.** Ensure your policy explicitly covers helicopter and seaplane medical evacuation from the Maldives. Standard policies often exclude light aircraft transfers. **Bring your medications.** Pharmacies in the Maldives have limited stock. Bring a full supply of any prescription medication plus extras for potential travel delays. **Inform the resort.** If you have any medical condition — allergies, cardiac history, diabetes — inform the resort before arrival.
