# Why We Score Destinations Differently: The 5-Pillar Framework Explained
## The Problem with Star Ratings
A five-star resort in the Swiss Alps and a five-star resort on a remote Maldivian atoll share the same rating. But one has a world-class hospital 20 minutes away, reliable mobile coverage everywhere, and emergency services that respond with military precision. The other might require a 90-minute seaplane evacuation for a serious medical event — and that seaplane doesn't fly after dark.
Both are exceptional properties. But they present fundamentally different risk profiles. Star ratings don't capture this. Our 5-Pillar Framework does.
## The Five Pillars
### 1. Security (S-Score)
We assess physical security infrastructure, crime statistics, political stability, emergency response capability, and — critically — the solo traveller safety environment. A destination might be statistically safe but culturally challenging for certain travellers. We note both.
**What we measure:** Crime indices, police response times, property security features, embassy proximity, political stability ratings, cultural safety factors.
### 2. Health & Medical (H-Score)
This is where our analysis diverges most dramatically from traditional travel guides. We map the actual medical infrastructure available to travellers — not the resort spa, but the nearest hospital capable of handling a cardiac event, a serious allergic reaction, or a broken bone.
**What we measure:** Hospital proximity and capability, pharmacy access, air ambulance availability, specialist medical services, water and air quality, altitude considerations.
### 3. Communications (C-Score)
In an emergency, your phone might be your lifeline. We map actual mobile coverage, identify dead zones, assess WiFi reliability, and note whether satellite communication backup exists.
**What we measure:** Mobile network coverage maps, WiFi reliability, dead-zone identification, satellite phone necessity, emergency communication channels.
### 4. Amenities (A-Score)
This is closest to what traditional ratings measure — but we go deeper. We assess the authenticity and depth of experiences, not just the presence of a spa and restaurant. A vineyard estate with genuine winemaking heritage scores differently from a hotel that added a "wine experience" to its marketing.
**What we measure:** Dining quality and authenticity, spa and wellness substance, cultural access, activity range, experience depth vs. marketing veneer.
### 5. Logistics (L-Score)
How do you actually get there? What happens when weather disrupts your transfer? Is the check-in process designed for efficiency or bureaucracy? Logistics intelligence is the pillar that most directly affects your travel experience.
**What we measure:** Airport proximity and transfer quality, check-in efficiency, internal transport, weather contingency planning, VIP protocol availability.
## How Scores Work
Each pillar receives a score from 1-10 based on documented evidence. We weight scores differently based on traveller profile — our Comparison Engine lets you apply Solo Safety, Wellness, Executive, or Wine Connoisseur weightings to see how destinations rank for your specific priorities.
A destination with a 6 in Health but a 10 in Amenities is not worse than one with 8s across the board — but you should know about that 6 before you book. That is what we provide: informed choice, not prescriptive judgment.
